Musical Friday: Native Hip Hop

Appropriate given the official apology to Natives for abuse in the residential schools. While the apology is being praised in the mainstream media, few remember that Harper’s government continues to perpetuate crimes against the Native people of Canada – for instance: destroying the Kelowna Accord; refused to fast-track payments – to the very people named in this apology – for elder Natives who may not live to see the details of the restitution ironed out; continues to ignore land claims of the Tyendinaga around the Bay of Quinte in Ontario, the Six Nations of Caledonia in Ontario, and the Lubicon of northern Alberta; and voted against – and attempted to derail – the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

All the same, some Native hip hop:

  • Manik’s “Go Away Dream” [mp3] and “Horror Stories” [mp3], both from the Indigebonics album, which is available for free here.
  • Team Rezofficial’s “Hater” [mp3] and “Prepped for War” [mp3], from the Work mixtape, which is also available for free from here.
  • I’d also recommend podcasts from The Plex Show, Friday nights 9:00-11:00PM local time on Aboriginal Voices Radio.
  • Not Natives, but still awesome – The Native Guns’ “Champion” [mp3].
