Collegial

I was in Toronto on Tuesday to take part in small seminar/workshop around a draft of the first half of my supervisor’s book in progress on Montesquieu. (Given that the book isn’t under contract and it is still in draft, I don’t think I should say much about its contents at this time – but there will be much to say in the future.) The workshop involved a few of my supervisor’s other doctoral students and a faculty member he has been collaborating with recently. I’ve often complained about a general lack of collegiality and intellectual or academic community at York. This event proves it can happen at York and it was one of those rare events that justify seeking a career as an academic. It also provided hope for the next generation of undergraduates as his son – “this is Jacob, my second son” – joined in for the second half and brought his own marked up copy of the manuscript.
