Jon used to post a lot about his “post-hegemony” thesis – not so much anymore! Two more examples of the bankruptcy of ideology, this time from Canada: earlier in the week, the Prime Minister announced he would only accept candidates for federal appointments to the courts who would find the legislation his government passed to be constitutional. No need for explanation or justification: this is what we’re doing and sucks to your ass-mar, so to speak. Today our newspapers report that Blair has announced his intention to withdraw about 1,600 soldiers from Iraq. This is how the Ottawa Citizen reported the story:
Headline: Brits pull troops
Caption: Blair announces withdrawal of 1,600 troops from Iran in the ‘coming months’
First paragraph: Britain will withdraw about 1,600 troops from Iraq over the “coming months” and aims to cut its 7,100-strong force to below 5,000 by late summer if local forces can secure the southern part of the country, Prime Minister Tony Blair said Wednesday.
How to explain that one? Wishful thinking? Or something more banal?
