Upcoming Intellectual Events

With the start of the new academic year, universities and departments are slowly advertising their speaker series. As is often the case, universities in the same area have rather similar lists of speaks – the academic version of a world tour, I suppose. So far, Trent University, in Peterborough, has announced the most interesting series, but I’m not sure I can be convinced to regularly drive two hours in each direction for an hour and a half lecture and booze-up without the alcohol.

Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Carleton University – Fall 2006 speaker series. Highlights: October 27, Peter Gose (“What Was Colonialism? Contending Articulations in Sixteenth Century Peru”); November 10, William de Lint (“Security, Simulation and the Political”); November 24, Robyn Smith (“Becoming Rat of Early Vitamin Research”).

College of Humanities, Carleton University – September 15, Stanley Rosen (“Leo Strauss in Chicago: A Memoir”)

Department of English, Carleton University – 2006/2007 Munro Beattie Lecture, Wole Soyinka (“Human Rights and Cultural Claims,” 1986 Nobel Laureate)

The Center for Theory, Culture and Politics at Trent University 2006-2007 speaker series, “Re-presentations.” Highlights: September 14, Kenneth Reinhard (“Political Theology and Love: Paul, Lacan and Badiou” – also at University of Toronto that week); October 5, Gary Genosko; February 8, Jodi Dean (will she make it as far as Ottawa or Kingston?).

The Ryle Lectures, also at Trent, will feature Simon Blackburn this year. Perhaps a step down from Evelyn Fox Keller from last year… His lectures are entitled “Pragmatism, Minimalism and Common Sense.”

The Philosophy Department at the University of Toronto has its fall events listed here; mostly standard anglo-american philosophy of mind and langauge stuff. The Center of Criminology has a series of mainstream criminology events. The colloquia series at the Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology is here.

As always, information is next to impossible to find on the University of Ottawa, Queen’s University and York University websites.

U of Ottawa is a special case. I think they may be lazy to translate every announcement or something.

I’d offer you my tiny little couch to sleep on, if needed, though I don’t know if that improves or makes worse the prospect of driving to Peterborough for a lecture. Will we be seeing you for at least one of the events?

I’m also pretty impressed with Trent’s performance, as far as the lectures go. The lecture series is integrated into the curriculum for the M.A. students here. I don’t know where the money comes from.

Also: is that Rosen thing a public lecture? It’s advertised as part of the ten year College anniversary party. Not that I’m going. It’s only been two years since I graduated.

It’s advertised on the main events calendar, so I can only assume it is public. Either way, I’ll go. His subject sounds a lot like his last lecture – in that very room back when I was in third or fourth year undergrad – where he was supposed to talk about Nietzsche, but ended up talking about being in Kojeve’s office and how impressed he was with Kojeve’s knowledge of worldwide banana prices or somesuch. I expect much of the same. The lecture is at three – maybe the party is after? I won’t attend that, unless the spread is real good and the bar is free.

If Jodi doesn’t make it to Ottawa that week, I might be persuaded to attend it in Peterborough. Please report back on the Reinhard lecture.

Rosen’s talk has apparently been cancelled – or, at least it is no longer a public event.

I will. It won’t be a terribly informed report. I haven’t read Badiou’s book on Paul, and am unlikely to in the next few days, but we’ll see how it goes.
