More Awesome/Some Lame

Awesome

Although she smells like a circus, Minnie was pretty awesome.

Finally getting around to listening to the new Silver Jews album, “Tanglewood Numbers”, I’m likely the only person in the world with this opinion, but the first Silver Jews album I bought, “American Water”, remains my favourite, but I cannot deny that “Tanglewood Numbers” is quite good.

It is also awesome to have finally heard the new self-titled Broken Social Scene album. Although their previous album “You Forgot It In People” is much better, the packaging — and the really scary video for the first single (seriously: how huge is Jason Collett compared to the rest of the band?) — is quite good. Which brings me to another new album that is not as good as its predecessor; viz., Jason Collett’s “Idols of Exile” is enjoyable, but not comparable to “Motor Motel Love Songs”. Speaking of Jason Collett (and this is something awesome from a previous year), once we saw them (i.e., Broken Social Scene) at the Capital Music Hall, in Ottawa, and there was this real cool guy standing behind us. He was really tall and spent much time wandering from where we were standing to the “merch table”. He was dressed like sailor. That was awesome. It turned out that it was Jason Collett. We couldn’t be blamed: I’d only recognize him with a gas mask or a paper bag on!

Joel Plaskett’s album “La de da” was also quite good. More country than his usual fare, which is fine.

I discovered I had one degree of separation from the Arcade Fire. Jeremy Gara, the guy who replaced the original drummer, was, in high school, in a band with Matt, who I sat beside on the schoolbus. Through Matt I knew Jeremy. So that makes me awesome, even if I wasn’t too fond of him at the time. Not being his friend, I have no opinion on him now.

The wood stove.

Lame

My parents saw the Arcade Fire. They opened for U2. Both are lame: my parents seeing the Arcade Fire and the fact that they opened for U2.

Bono and Ben Affleck.

“Stand up for Canada” (beep! beep!)

I like what I’ve heard of the Silver Jews, but that’s not saying very much.

You are not alone in your preference of American Water. It’s on my short list of favorite records by anyone. “My ski vest has buttons like convenience store mirrors and they help me see that everything in this room right now is a part of me.”

    That’s all.
